John Hastert, Well Known Alton Farmer, Passes On Rites Monday at St.Mary’s Church.

John Hastert, prominent Alton Farmer, died at about four o’clock Friday morning, Jan 22, from a heart attack suffered while asleep. His sudden passing was a great shock to his family and legion of friends. He was born at David City NE. Feb 19, 1885 the son of Nicholas and Catherine Hastert. He married Mary De Muth of David City Sept 27, 1911 and the couple farmed near David City for some years before moving to Farwell NE eighteen years ago the family moved to Alton where they farmed south of Alton. Five children were born to the couple, namely Harry of Inglewood, Calif.; Charles of Alton; Margaret (Mrs. Ralph Doud) of Sioux City; James of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Donald of Fort Riley, Kansas.

He is survived by his widow, five children and seven grandchildren; also four sisters Mrs. Susan Ruppert of Alton; Mrs. Magadalene Streff of LeMars; Mrs. Eugene Schroeder of Sioux City; Mrs. Lee Kettler of LeMars: and two brothers: Pete and Henry both of Los Angeles. Two brothers Nich and Charley and one sister, Mrs. Ann Bachman, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Mary’s church, the Very Rev Z. Reising officiating. Pallbearers were nephews: Lawrence, Ray, Ted and Arthur Ruppert, Leo and Lawrence Schroeder. Pvt. Donald Hastert arrived home Friday night, James Hastert flew from Philadelphia arriving Saturday and Harry Hastert on Sunday from Inglewood, CA. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Doud and family came from Sioux City.
Many relatives were listed. Mr. Hastert was a good husband and father, and kind neighbor, always friendly and cheerful, and he will be greatly missed in the community which has been his home for nearly a score of years.
