Hawarden, IA: Gladys E. Edmunds, 97, of Hawarden, Iowa died Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden. Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 1, at 1:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church (LCMS) of Hawarden with Rev. Joshua Lowe officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation, with the family present, will be Tuesday, October 31 from 7:00-8:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Hawarden. A prayer service will follow the visitation at 8:00 PM. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawarden Public Library, or Hospice of Siouxland. 
 
Gladys Elnora (Velgersdyk) Edmunds was born September 26, 1920, at Rock Valley, Iowa, daughter of Nicholas and Minnie (Claussen) Velgersdyk. She married William M. Edmunds February 10, 1945, at the Lutheran Parsonage. Together they lived in Hawarden where she was employed as a rural school teacher, at J.C. Penney's and Peterson Family Shoe Store.
 
She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, traveling- visiting all 50 states-spending winters in Texas and spending time with her grandchildren in Arkansas. Gladys was a long time member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered at the Thrift Store. She looked forward to coffees with her sisters and friends.
 
Gladys died Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Hillcrest Care Center. She was 97 years of age.
 
She is survived by her daughter, Ardell (Ralph) Thomsen of Little Rock, Arkansas, son, Terry Edmunds of St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Natasha (Mike) Weissman, of Reno, Nevada, Nicole (David) Cypert of Conway, Arkansas, Lindsey (Phil) Simmons of Little Rock, Arkansas, Mark Thomsen of Little Rock, Arkansas, eight great grandchildren, and a sister Donna Obbink of Sioux Center, Iowa.  
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill,  brothers, Clarence and Eldon Velgersdyk, sisters, Marge Abbott, Myva Larson, and brothers-in-law, George Abbott, Gilmore Larson and John Obbink.
