Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Henry John Schuller was born on September 4, 1915, on his family’s farm near Newkirk, the son of Anthony and Jennie (Beltman) Schuller. He lived his youth on the farm and attended country school. During World War II, Henry served as a medic in the United States Army, from 1944-1946. He was stationed in the European Theater and was on the front lines during the Battle of the Bulge. While in the army, Psalm 27 became his favorite passage, which he read daily.

On August 16, 1950, Henry was united in marriage to Alberta Ruth Lucas at the Alton Reformed Church. Together the couple farmed near Alton until 1989, when they retired into Alton. Henry and Alberta enjoyed gardening, and Henry was known for having a green thumb. He never gave up his love of plants and flowers, and he could nurture almost anything to grow. In retirement, Henry taught himself to cane chairs and other furniture and enjoyed the challenge of caning even into his nineties.

Henry and Alberta loved their many nieces and nephews and cherished the times that they came to visit. It was very special to Henry that almost all of them came for his 100th birthday celebration in 2015.
Henry was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where he had served as an elder. Henry’s strong faith in God came first in his life, and he often remarked, “God has blessed me beyond measure”.

Henry will always be remembered as a loving and faithful husband. As Alberta’s health declined, Henry’s training as a medic in the army helped him as he cared for her in their home for many years. His love and devotion to Alberta touched many people as he faithfully visited her every day during the five years she was a resident at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City. After Alberta’s death, Henry enjoyed the many visits from family, friends, and neighbors. He will also be remembered for his wealth of wit and wisdom. He will be deeply missed.

Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta, on June 29, 2008, after more than 57 years of marriage, and by all of his siblings and their spouses; Jessamine and Gerrit Vander Pol, Margaret and Arthur Reekers, Violet and Henry Mouw, and the Rev. Dr. Robert H. and Arvella Schuller.

Henry and Alberta will long be remembered for their generosity to Hope Haven International in Rock Valley, and per Henry’s wishes, all memorials will be directed to Hope Haven.
