When John Jansen Kersbergen was born on January 15, 1881, in Willeskop, Utrecht, Netherlands, his father, Gerardus, was 21 and his mother, Elisabeth, was 20. He was the oldest of nine children: William, Gerrit, Jack, Albert, Arie, Henrei, Frank, and Anne. He had four sons and three daughters with Martha Velgersdyk between 1906 and 1923.They were: Gerrit, Martha, Nicholas, John, Elizabeth, Elsie and William. He died in 1944 in Iowa, at the age of 63, and was buried in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, Iowa.

He was a member of the US Cavalry and fought in the Spanish American War with Teddy Roosevelt and also the Chinese "Boxers Rebellion". He eventually returned to Rock Valley where he was the town blacksmith.
