FORMER ROCK VALLEY LADY BURNED; DIED
Tragic Death in Fire

Word was received here Monday of the tragic death of Mrs. Herbert Wiggins of Cando, N.D. Mrs. Wiggins met her death in a fire at her home. It is not yet known whether she burned to death or died of burns sustained in the fire, a few days after. The home was saved by the firemen. Many old residents remember the Wiggins family.

Katherine Rebecca Plander was born at Bramahaven, Germany, June 1, 1865 and came to the United States in the year 1872 with her parents, settling at Marshalltown. In 1884 she came to Rock Valley to live with her sister, Mrs. Etta Perkins. On December 17, 1889, Miss Plander was united in marriage to Herbert E. Wiggins and to this union were born four children, James F. now of Brunswick, Mo., Stella Elizabeth died while attending college on Nov. 6, 1918, George H. died on April 23, 1900 at Wellsville, Kansas, and Frank F. of Cando, N.D. She is survived by her husband, H. E. Wiggins, and the two sons, James and Frank; also two sisters, Mrs. Etta Perkins of Malvern, Kansas and Mrs. Anna Daescher of Sanborn, Iowa and one brother, H. C. Plander of Cando, N.D.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 24, at the Methodist church conducted by Rev. Hyek[?], assisted by the Congregational minister. She was buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

The Sioux County 1889/1890 marriage register has groom Herbert Elmer Wiggins, age 28, Plato Township farmer, born in Wisconsin, parents James Wiggins and Sarah Payne; bride Catherine Plander, age 24, of Rock Township, born in Germany, parents Diedrick Plander and Hanna Huesing; married December 17, 1889 in Rock Township.

Census records and birth records for her children show her name spelled sometimes Catherine, sometimes Katherine.

The 1920 U.S. census for Cando, ND shows Herbert E. (57) and Katherine R. (54) Wiggins living with sons James F. (24, born Iowa) and Frank F. (17, born Kansas), Katherine’s brother Henry C. Plander, and a hired man. Katherine and Henry are naturalized and speak English. Herbert is a dairy farmer.
