Mrs. George (Martha) Kellen, age 91, Of Alton died Wednesday, February 5, 1997at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 8, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, Reverend Clem Currans of Granville officiated. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Alton, under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home, Remsen.

Martha was born May 2, 1905 at rural Alton, the daughter of John and Katherine (Thelen) Schneider, Sr. She was raised and educated in the Alton are and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy at Alton in 1924. She then attended Summer Institute at Dubuque where she received her teacher’s certificate. Martha then taught rural school in the Alton area for four years. She married George Kellen on May 28, 1928 at Alton. They farmed in the Granville/Alton area until retiring and moving into Alton in December, 1960. Mr. Kellen died October 12, 1984.

Mrs. Kellen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Rosary Society.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Kay and Alan Fisch of Osage Beach, Missouri and Janet and David Allison if San Diego, California; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and her husband, Glenis and Robert Kellen; a grandson, Stephen Paul Fisch; a great-granddaughter, Kellen Swalve; seven brothers; one in infancy, Peter, John, Joseph, Aloysius, Leo and Victor Schneider; and seven sisters, Gertrude in infancy, Mary when a child, Catherine Schneider, Mrs. Tom (Rita) Kool, Mrs. Joseph (Bertha) Bouen, Emma Schneider and Mrs. Richard (Josephine) Foreman.
