WM. MATHEWS DEAD

Wm. Mathews, a former well-known resident of Rock Valley, and a pioneer of this vicinity, died at his home at Madison, Wisconsin, Wednesday morning, according to a message received here Wednesday. No particulars were given but it is known that Mr. Mathews had not been well for some time.

The Mathews family moved from Rock Valley to Madison a few years ago. Miss Maud Mathews is the only one left now of the family of four.

DEATH OF WM. MATHEWS

William Mathews, an old resident of this vicinity, passed away early on Tuesday morning at his home, 406[?] Kane street, this city. Mr. Mathews had been in failing health for several years and sustained a stroke the day previous to his death.

Mr. Mathews was born in the town of Burlington on June 2, 1850, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Mathews, early settlers. When a young man he went to Iowa, where he made his home for a number of years, for a while at Ames and later at Rock Valley.

He was married on Sept. 18, 1879 to Miss Sarah Halliday, of Elroy, Wis. In 1916 they returned to Burlington to reside and Mrs. Mathews died in 1920. Two daughters were born to them, Grace, who died in 1916[?], and Maude who kept house for her father the past few years. One sister, Mrs. W. W. Newberry[?] of Burlington, is living, also two half-sisters, Mrs. Daniel Mathews of this city and Mrs. Clara Badger, Azuza, California.

Mr. Mathews was of a quiet and [illegible] nature and will be remembered as a kind and helpful neighbor and a good citizen. He was a member of Burlington Lodge No. 26[?], A.F. and A.M., also the Masonic[?] consistory of Sioux City.

Funeral services will take place from the family home on Saturday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. F.[?] L. Benson of Elgin, Ill., officiating. Services at the grave will be conducted by the Masons.—Burlington Free Press.

The 1910 U.S. Census for Rock Valley has William Mathews, age 60, born in Wisconsin, parents born in New York, married 30 years, occupation none; wife Sarah, age 52, born in Wisconsin, parents born England, mother of 2 children, both living; and daughters Grace (28) and Maude (26), both born in Iowa, both country school teachers.
