He attended country school, Hull Christian School, and Western Christian High. After high school he joined his parents with the day to day operation of the farm. He enjoyed using his natural ability to resolve or repair almost anything,
On July 27, 1951 Henry was united in marriage to Evelyn Joyce De Jong. They raised their six daughters on the family farm. In 1975 Henry fulfilled their dream to build a new home and farmstead, largely by himself. In 1982 Henry and Evelyn stepped out in faith and started and operated Vis Auto Sales from his residence and later re-located the business to Perkins’ Corner. In 2004 Henry and Evelyn moved to a home in Sioux Center, IA.
Henry was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull, active as a Deacon, an Elder, and Cadet Counselor; and later became a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. He also volunteered in M2 prison ministry in Sioux Falls, SD. He enjoyed working with his hands, especially woodworking. He was a man of many talents. There was no project he was not willing to try.
