Mr. Albert Heemstra, age 95, of Hospers, passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2017, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, August 14, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Milton Sikkema will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hospers Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service on Monday, at 9:30am, at the church.

Visitation with the family present will be on Sunday, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the CHURCH. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Albert was born on September 6, 1921, in rural Boyden, the son of Henry and Gertrude (De Haan) Heemstra, He was raised south of Boyden, in Alton, west of Orange City, and in Hospers. He attended country schools and the Alton Public School. He served in the United States Marines during World War II.

On December 19, 1946, he married Berdella Rensink at Hospers. They farmed in the Hospers-Granville area until October of 2009, when they moved to the Kosgrove Estate in Sioux Center. Berdella passed away on November 8, 2009, in Sioux Center.

On May 23, 2017, Albert became a resident of Royal Meadows.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hospers, where he served as a deacon and an elder. He also belonged to the Reuter American Legion Post in Hospers. He served on the board of directors of the Farmers Elevator and was a founding member of the Rural Water System, both of Hospers.

He enjoyed going to ballgames, playing cards, reading, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his two sons and their wives, Larry and Bev Heemstra, of Spirit Lake; and Ron and Val Heemstra of Sioux Center; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Matthew Heemstra, and his wife, Alyssa, and their daughters, Cora and Madeline; Lacey, and her husband, Joe Hubers, and their sons, Elijah and Ezra; Kim, and her husband, Kevin Bosma, and their children, Malia, Hayes, and Ledger; Kayla, and her husband, Cory Gotto, and their children, Callum and Haven; and Kyle Heemstra; and two sisters, Angeline Elgersma, of Sheldon; and Lois Ford, of Mesa, Arizona.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
