John A. Jongewaard was born at Pella, Iowa, September 20, 1855. He came to Sioux County at the age of 17 and was married to Miss Hatttie Haverkamp October 31, 1882.

To this union nine children were born: Dr. Jeane Jongewaard, Ames; Mrs. (Reverend) H. Milne, India ; Dr. Willemina Jongewaard, India, who passed away two years ago ; Mrs. Dr. Irwin Johns, Ames; Dr. Bert Jongewaard, India; Mrs. (Dr.) J.F. Veltman, Winterset; Mrs. (Dr.) M. Winter, Miles City, Mont.; Henry Jongewaard; Ames ; Laurence Jongewaard, Princeton University, New Jersey.

Mr: Jongewaard worked a few years for the F.M. Slagle Company, and the family then moved to Carnes where they had a grocery store, leaving four years later for Boyden having bought a store there.

In 1901 Mr. Jongewaard was elected county recorder and with the exception of two years, from 1905 to 1907, he served the county as recorder until 1924 when he declined to run for re-election. From 1901 until the fall of 1925 the family made Orange City their home.

Not only did he give his best services to the county but also took a very active part in church affairs.

Funeral services were held in the First Reformed Church Thursday afternoon, conducted by Reverend H. Colenbrander who was assisted by Reverend C. De Young and Reverend J.D. Dykstra.
