Miss Jennie Jacobs, 85, formerly of Newkirk, died January 2 at Pilgrims Place, Claremont, California.

Services were to be January 4 in Claremont Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. January 6 in the Newkirk Cemetery. The Reverend Clarence Van Heukelom will officiate, with the Van Etten Funeral Home of Orange City in charge.

Miss Jacobs was born December 12, 1891 at Newkirk to Christiaan and Mary (Van Zyl) Jacobs.

She served as a missionary of the Reformed Church of America 40 years, most of the time in China. She retired to California.

Survivors include three brothers, Henry of Grandville, Michigan, Bert of Sioux Center and Sam of Claremont, California.

Funeral services were held on January 4, 1977, for Jennie Jacobs, a well known missionary, an Orange City native and a graduate from Northwestern Classical Academy.

She was buried in the Newkirk Cemetery on January 6, 1977.

Miss Jacobs served in the Army Nursing Corps during World War I.

She worked as a community nurse in Kentucky and received her diploma in nursing from the University of Louisville.

In 1924 she began her service in Nanking and Shaowu in China but left the troubled country for Taiwan.

Eventually returning to China, she served at Foochow from 1941 until 1945 when she was made a civilian prisoner of war.

In 1951 she left China for Ceylon where she organized the Schools of Nursing in two Mission Hospitals.

She returned to the United States in 1955 and had lived in Pilgrim Place since 1960.
