From the Boyden Reporter, March 5, 1925:

Cornelia Jean Scholten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gehard[Gerhard?] Scholten, was born on the 30th day of August, 1918, and died on Thursday, February 26th, 1925, at the age of 6 years, 5 months and 26 days. The funeral services were held on Saturday at 1:30 at the home of the grandmother Mrs. G. J. Scholten and at 2:00 o'clock at the Reformed church with Rev. J. M. Lumkes officiating, assisted by Dr. W. T. McConnell, pastor of the U. P. church. Interment was made in the Boyden cemetery.

The little girl was ill for nearly four weeks with chorea and this together with heart trouble caused her death. Everything possible was done for her in the way of tender care and medical assistance, but was of no avail and she was called home by her Lord and Maker. Besides her parents she leaves to mourn her death three sisters and two brothers, they are Henrietta A., Eunice, Pearl Lois, Robert and Gerhard William; and a large number of other relatives. From the Alton Democrat, March 6, 1925, Boyden news:

LITTLE GIRL DIED AFTER TONSILITIS

Little Jean, the six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garret Scholten, died at the home of her grand mother Mrs. Scholten at 7 P.M. Thursday evening and was laid to rest in the Boyden cemetery Saturday afternoon.

Her illness was of several weeks duration and was due to tonsil infection. The first symptoms indicated an attack of St. Vitus dance and as it was thought best to remove her from all confusion, she was brought to the home of her grandmother and placed under the care of a trained nurse. The best care possible was given to her but she grew steadily worse until death relieved her suffering. Many sorrowing friends extend their sympathy to the bereaved family in their hour of need.

Her death certificate has Cornelia Jeanne Scholten, born Aug. 30, 1918 in Hospers, Iowa; parents Gerrit Scholten, born in Alton, Iowa and Maria Johanna de Valois, born in Boyden, Iowa; died in Boyden February 26, 1925 at 6:30 p.m. of endocarditis, contributory cause chorea.
