From the Boyden Reporter, September 4, 1924:

EMIL HANSEN

Emil Hansen, Sr., a prominent resident of Sioux county, who has made his home the last year and a half with his daughter Mrs. John Walter of this city, died early on Tuesday morning of this week, Sept. 2nd. He was layed to rest Wednesday afternoon.

Mr. Hansen was born April 19th, 1872[i.e., 1852] in Germany, thus being in age 72 years, 4 months and 14 days at the time of his death. Mr. Hansen came to the United States in 1882 and was married in 1884 to Miss Wilhelmina Peters, settling on a farm one mile east and three miles south of Boyden, Iowa, where he was a prosperous farmer.

In later years he entered into political and social activities and held prominent and responsible positions which were a credit to the community, as well as to all of the people connected. Especially is this true concerning the office of secretary of the Evangelical Lutheran church, which he held for 12 years.

Two years ago he laid to rest his beloved wife, the companion of his life for 35 years and from this loss he never recovered. He is survived by an only brother living in Germany, four sons and three daughters: Henry Hansen, of Oklahoma City, Fred and Alfred and Mrs. Lena Wolf, Mrs. Lottie Walter and Mrs. Marie Oester, of Sheldon. [Yes, only three sons were listed.] There are also left fourteen grandchildren.

Emil Hansen was a man who enjoyed the confidence and friendship of the community, much respected for his strength of character and loved for his social nature.

His death certificate has Emil Hansen, retired farmer; born April 19, 1852 in Germany; father Ness Hansen, mother's name unknown; died at 6:00 a.m. Sept. 2, 1924 at Sheldon (although it says the doctor last saw him alive on Sept. 3), of multiple neuritis; buried in the German Lutheran Cemetery.

FindaGrave.com has Emil Hansen, born April 19, 1852, died Sept. 2, 1924, spouse Wilhelmine Charlotte Marie Hansen (1862-1922), buried in Saint Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Sheldon; with a photo of the headstone.
