DEATH CLAIMS PIONEER CITIZEN
A. F. GEFKE PASSED AWAY VERY SUDDENLY SUNDAY
Had Been a Resident of Hawarden for Forty Years.—Survived by Wife and Two Children
A. F. Gefke, a pioneer resident of this city, passed away suddenly while sitting in a rocking chair at his home Sunday morning. While Mr. Gefke had been in poor health for some time, there was no indication that death was at hand and the end came very suddenly. He had been quite poorly since
last fall but with the return of the warm days of spring appeared to be considerably improved. He was up town for the last time last Thursday afternoon. Friday and Saturday he did not appear to be quite so well and a physician was called to attend him on Saturday. Sunday morning he arose and had breakfast but complained that one of his limbs was cold.

Mrs. Gefke summoned their son, Fred A. Gefke, from his home about 8:30 and he again called a physician. Circulation was again apparently restored in the limb and the physician departed a short time afterwards Fred Gefke returned to his home. It was but a little time after this that Mr. Gefke asked his wife to bring him a glass of water. She placed this on a chair near him, inquiring if he could reach it. He responded that he could but just a moment later expired suddenly. Death Was due to heart failure induced by a long siege of bronchial asthma.

Funeral services were held at the Associated Church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Edwin Booth Jr., and interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Members of the Modern Woodmen and Eagles lodges, of which orders he had long been a member, attended the services in a body.

Andreas F. Gerfke was born in Germnay Nov 5, 1859, so had attained the age of 65 years 5 months and 28 days. He came to America in 1882 and located at Gladbrook, Tama county, Iowa, where he remained for three years. He came to Hawarden in 1885 and has resided here continuously since that time, a period of forty years. On April 17, 1889, he was united in marriage with Minnie Mundt in Hawarden and she survives him. Three children were born to them, Tom Edward, who passed away in 1913, Mrs. Emnm Grabenstein of Eustis, Neb.,-and Fred A. Gefke of this city. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Marie Iwers of Sioux City.

Mr. Gefke learned the trade of a mason and bricklayer in Germany in his youth and during his years of residence here followed this work until failing health compelled him to give up strenuous labor some five years ago. He was a tireless worker when in health and worked with unusual speed on every task which he undertook. After the use of cement came into general use he specialized in concrete work, and many miles of Hawarden's sidewalks were put down under his careful supervision. He took pride in his work and was never satisfied with a job until it was completed in a thorough workmanlike manner. He was a good husband, a loyal and devoted father and a dependable and trustworthy neighbor. His wide circle of old time friends sincerely regret his passing and will extend sincere sympathy to his wife and children.

Out of town relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Iwers, Mr. and Mrs. August Tick and children and Rudolph Iwers of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. John Rehmstedt and Mrs. Henrietta Cramer of Parker, S. D., and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thill-of Adrian, Minn.
