Mr. James Dykstra, age 88, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, June 28, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Vande Zande will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday, at 9:30am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

James was born on July 19, 1928, at Archer, the son of Charles and Anna (Andringa) Dykstra. He was raised at Hospers, where he graduated from the Christian school.

On March 24, 1950, he married Elizabeth Lammers in Sheldon. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. They farmed near Hospers until 1966, when they moved into Hospers. For fifteen years, he was employed at Hi-Precision in Orange City. In 1969, they moved to Orange City. Later he was in the maintenance department of SiouxPreme Packing in Sioux Center. In July of 2016, he became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, and in January of 2017, he transferred to Prairie Ridge.

“Jim” was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church and the Reuter American Legion Post in Hospers. He enjoyed bowling and motorcycling, and the couple wintered in Texas for fifteen years.

Survivors include his wife of more than 67 years, “Liz”; four children and their spouses, Jerry and Chris Dykstra, of Orange City; Kathy and Wes Boogerd, of Hull; and Lorie and Tim Dietchy and Mark Dykstra, all of Orange City; fourteen grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; five siblings, Wilma De Boer, of Sheldon; Jessie Vander Plaats, of Sanborn; Henry (Joyce) Dykstra, of Orange City; Hilda Holtrop of Sheldon; and Betty (Herm) Cooper, of Orange City; a sister-in-law, Florence (Dick) Dykstra, of Hospers; his wife’s sister, Fannie Menning; and sister-in-law, Karen Lammers; and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerrit (Julia) Dykstra, Dick Dykstra, and Don (Sharene) Dykstra; and his wife’s siblings and their spouses, Hermina (Max) McGinnis, William (Lucille) Lammers, Norman Menning, and Gerrit Lammers.

Memorials may be directed to Hope Haven in Rock Valley, the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice, or the First Christian Reformed Church.
