She was raised on a farm in rural Rock Rapids and attended Central Lyon High School, graduating as valedictorian of her class in 1964. She then enrolled at Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska, where she earned her teaching degree in 1968. She enjoyed playing the alto saxophone during her schooling, participating in the marching band at Central Lyon as well as touring with the Concordia band. She then taught mathematics and physical education at Western Christian High School for two years.

On August 2, 1968, she married Donald Hoksbergen in Rock Rapids. They lived in Hull for two years before moving to a farm one mile south of Hull where she and Don raised their four children. She was also a talented seamstress, designing and sewing her own wedding dress and bridesmaids’ dresses as well as sewing all the bridesmaids’ dresses for her children’s weddings.

She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in November of 2005, at the age of 59. In 2007, she and her husband moved to a home in Hull where she lived for four years before her condition deteriorated and the need for additional care became necessary. She first lived at the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, and in the fall of 2014, she became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

Mrs. Hoksbergen was a member of the Hull Protestant Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School and enjoyed being a member of the Ladies Society.
