A Good Woman Gone
Mrs. M. J. Finch sleeps her life away Sunday afternoon.
The angel of death has again invaded the home of M. J. Finch and family, this time taking away the loving wife and mother. On Sunday March 2, occurred the sad death of Olive Finch Bush. Last Sunday just seven weeks later, the spirit of the mother was taken to join that of the daughter who had gone before. She had been an invalid for several years, but while life lasted those nearest and dearest hoped against hope that some means of restoring her to health would be found! But the seeds of the destroyer of life had become too, deeply rooted and she was carried away in spite of the care and the prayers of those devoted to her.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Burling at the home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon and the remains were tenderly laid to rest in Grace Hill cemetery.

Amelia Mc Manus was born Sept. 4, 1848; She was left an orphan when only six years of age by the death of father and mother. A year later she and her brother were brought to Iowa by a family by the name of Neff, with whom she lived several years. On June 25, 1870 she was united in marriage to M. J. Finch in Black Hawk county, this state, and in 1875 moved with her husband to their wild and unbroken farm near Rock Valley where she bravely withstood all the trials, hardships and longings for neighbors and civilization that are incident to pioneer life, in, 1877 they returned to Black Hawk county where they remained three years and then returned to the town of Rock Valley, where they resided until 1886, when Mr. Finch was elected clerk of the courts and removed his family to Orange City.

They came to Hawarden in the fall of 1897 and have since resided here. Eight children were born
to this union, seven of whom are still living. Any tribute the writer of this could offer would fail to do justice to the simple beauty of that noble character which has gone from among us. Deeply devoted to her home life, her first thoughts and care were for her husband and children. Tender of them to the last degree, none of them ever failed to find her willing to carry their burdens, sympathetic in their weariness or sickness and grieved with their griefs. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved ones in their deep sorrow.
