Mrs. Alvin Wood Passed Away Saturday Evening
Reached Ripe Old Age of 85 Years.--Lived in Hawarden Continuously for Thirty-Seven Years

Mrs. Alvin Wood, a resident of this city for thirty-seven years, passed away at her home here about 6 o'clock Saturday evening, following a lingering illness due to the infirmities incident to her advanced years Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Wm. F. Vance, pastor of the Associated Churches. Tuesday morning the remains were taken to Sioux City and interment was made in Graceland cemetery where her husband and son are buried. Accompanying the remains to Sioux City were Rev. and Mrs. Wm. F. Vance, Mrs. S. E. Brown, Mrs. B. G. Wood of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Wood and children Ellis Jr. and Warren.

Juliette Roberds was born in a log cabin at Avoca, N.Y., March 30, 1838, so had reached the advanced age of 85 years, 10 months and 16 days. Her parents were pioneers of Stueben[i.e., Steuben] county, N.Y., having settled there shortly after the Revolutionary War. She was one of a family of thirteen children, all of whom have preceded her in death. On Nov. 8, 1860, she was united in marriage with Alvin Wood. Three children were born to this union, two sons and one daughter, H. L. Wood of Sioux City, B. G. Wood, who was accidentally killed in the Oscar Ruff disaster in Sioux City in 1918, and Mrs. Sabra Brown of Hawarden. There is also one adopted daughter, Mrs. A. L. Clemens of Sheldon.

The family came to Hawarden in 1887 and Mrs. Wood has since continued to reside here. Mr. Wood passed away a number of years ago and since his death her daughter, Mrs. Sabra Brown, has made a home for her and given her every possible care and attention during her declining years. Besides her children, she is survived by ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Mrs. Wood was a member of the First Methodist church of Avoca, N.Y., but never transferred her membership to a local church. Although she has been in feeble health for many years and at numerous times during the past few years has been at death's door, she displayed most remarkable recuperative powers an her fortitude and cheery manner have been a marvel to her many friends. She was a splendid type of Christian womanhood and in her death her children are called upon to mourn the loss of a true and devoted mother, companion and friend.
