Herdis Irene Tevis Rudd, 99, died on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Whispering Heights, Rock Valley, Iowa. Herdis, formerly of Huron, South Dakota, died peacefully surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 5, at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Rock Valley with Father Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will follow at Altoona Cemetery in Hitchcock, South Dakota. Visitation, with the family present, will be held one hour prior to mass from 10:00-11:00 AM at the church.
 
   Herdis was born June 5, 1917 in Redfield, South Dakota.  Her parents were John and Dagmar (Larsen) Anderson.  She grew up in rural Spink County and graduated from Redfield High School, Class of 1935.  She attended Northern Normal and Industrial School (Northern State University) and graduated in 1936 with a teaching certificate. Herdis taught 9 years in country schools in Spink County.  During the summer, she attended Black Hills State Teacher’s College and worked at the Palmer Gulch Lodge. On December 27, 1942, she was united in marriage to Ralph Tevis in Hitchcock, South Dakota. They lived on farms in Spink and Beadle Counties.  They purchased a farm near Wolsey, South Dakota in 1947. To this union, they had three daughters, Dagmar, Della and Teresa Tevis. Ralph died on February 11, 1954.  She sold the farm and purchased a home in Huron, South Dakota. She attended Huron College and renewed her teaching certificate. On August 9, 1955, Herdis was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Rudd at Huron, South Dakota.  To this union, they had two sons, John and Paul Rudd.
 
   In addition to being a loving wife and mother, she was a homemaker who enjoyed reading, quilting, and crossword puzzles.  Herdis and Bob loved to travel throughout the United States and Canada. In 1996, they visited Denmark and Sweden visiting relatives of her parents. In April 2007, Bob & Herdis purchased a senior condo in Rock Valley, Iowa to be closer to family.  Bob died on February 19, 2011. She became a resident of Whispering Heights in July 2014 and would have celebrated her 100th birthday on June 5, 2017.
 
   She was a member of St. Martin’s /Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Huron, South Dakota from 1955 – 2007 and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rock Valley since 2007.  She taught CCD, was a member of the Altar Society and Communion Minister to the homebound. 
 
   She is survived by her three children, Dagmar (Don) Rudd, Silver City, New Mexico; Della (Billie) Ranschau, Rock Valley, Iowa; John (Debbie) Rudd, Estherville, Iowa; son-in-law Guy Croucher, Aberdeen, South Dakota; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Norvin (Mary Ellen) Rudd, Huron, South Dakota; sisters-in-law Joni Rudd, Green Bay, Wisconsin and Adaline Busby, Amarillo, Texas; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
 
   Herdis was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Paul Rudd, a daughter, Teresa Tevis Croucher; sisters Janice and Helen Anderson, Marion (Jean) Summerside, brothers Clement, Melvin, Raymond, Harold (Ruby), Thorvald (Bernice) Anderson; sister-in-law Mary Ellen (Gene) Porter and brothers-in-law Edward Rudd and Carol Busby.
