Terry James DeJong, 71, passed away on May 15, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA. Terry had been battling cancer and fought a determined fight against the disease.
Terry was born on June 4, 1945 in Sioux City, IA, the son of the late Gerard DeJong and Betty Slocum. He was raised and educated in Sioux City and graduated from Riverside High School in 1963. He married Susan Fokken on September 17, 1963. He received a bachelor's degree from Upper Iowa University.
In 1966, he entered service in the Marine Corps, after his service in the Marine Corps he re-enlisted in the Army and ended his military career with over 39 years of service. He retired as a Colonel in the Special Forces. His combat service took him to the Republic of Vietnam, Bosnia and Kosovo, Korea and Afghanistan at the close of his career. He participated in many other peacetime missions during the Cold War period. Among the many awards in his career were the Bronze Star and Legion of Merit.
Terry's favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, military history and collecting militaria. He enjoyed airborne operations and earned airborne wings from eight nations around the world. He spent a great deal of time restoring classic cars and loved working on cars. He also enjoyed wood working and was a great all around handy man.
Terry had a long career in the healthcare field. He spent time at several hospitals as CEO but spent the major part of his career at Loring Hospital in Sac City, IA and Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley, IA. He finished his career at Redfield Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield, SD.

In addition to his wife, Susan, he leaves a son, and daughter in-law Josh and Julie of Dodge City, KS, a son, Greg of Palm Springs, CA and a son and daughter in-law, Jeff and Amy of Brandon, SD, three grandsons, Trey, Brady and Payton of Brandon, SD.
Terry is preceded in death by his parents.
