John Hoekstra, a resident of Rock Valley for the past nine years, passed away peacefully away at his home at 9:20 o’clock Sunday evening, surrounded by his children and other relatives. He was sixty-five years, four months and eleven days. Mr. Hoekstra had been afflicted with diabetes for several years but had been able to be up and around and to attend to business affairs and other tasks which he found to do until a week before his death when he was taken sick with the flu, which in his already weakened condition, he was not able to with stand.

Mr. Hoekstra was born in Marual, Netherlands, August 19, 1863, where he grew to manhood. He came to this country 47 years ago and located at Orange City where he resided eleven years. Later he moved to this vicinity and lived on a farm near Inwood, and from there onto a farm near Doon, where he lived seven years. He retired from farm life nine years ago and with his family moved to Rock Valley where he resided at the time of his death.

Mr. John Hoekstra was united in marriage with Ida Faber almost thirty-six years ago, who survives him. Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive their father and were at his bedside during his last hours. The children are Edward Hoekstra of Rock Valley, Neal Hoekstra and Peter Hoekstra of Doon; and Mrs. Otto Van’t Hul of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also leaves eleven grandchildren, and two sisters, P.P. Leistra of Rock Valley and Mrs. S. Boersma of Marmo, Netherland.

Mr. Hoekstra was a member of the Christian Reformed Church and always took an active interest in church and religious affairs. He served as elder in the Christian Reformed Church at Doon for thirteen years and was the only survivor of those who started the Church there twenty-six years ago. He also served as elder in the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley for six years.

Funeral services were held in the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley Thursday afternoon and the remains were taken to the Valley View Cemetery.
