Charles W. Hentges, 88, a resident of the Alton Community for over 40 years, passed away Tuesday afternoon at the Orange City Hospital, after a long illness at his home here.

He was born January 9, 1875 in Bissen, Luxembourg. He came to the United States as a child of three and lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore and Anna (Kremer) Hentges in Hospers. He married Mary Wilwert October 17, 1905 at Wheaton, Minnesota, and the couple lived and farmed in the Hospers vicinity for a time, later moving to Sheldon. In 1916 they came to Alton where they lived on their farm one-half mile south of town.

Mr. Hentges retired in 1921, and since then lived at his home in Alton. In 1955, Mr. and Mrs. Hentges were fortunate in celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Three children were born to the union, Malvina (Mrs. Henry Krogman), and Carl J., all of Alton-who with the widow survives; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Hentges was the last living member of his family, having been preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. During his long residence here he was highly regarded for his fair-dealing and his kindness to neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church here, R. Reverend Msgr. Zeno Reising officiating, and burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Carl Homan, Francis Homan, Cecil Pottebaum, Arnold Streff, Roger Henrich and Larry Elliot.
