Sioux County Pioneer Dies

August Winterfeld, 85, a Sioux county pioneer, died Wednesday night, September 21, at his home in Rock Valley following a lingering illness. Mr. Winterfeld, son of John and Rika Winterfeld, was born near St. Olof, Clayton county, Iowa, on September 17, 1864. He came to Plymouth county with his parents in 1879, locating in Preston township. He lived on a farm near Craig. In 1888 he came to Sioux county and broke the prairie for his homestead in Plato township. He married Caroline Fischer in 1892. They lived in Plato township until 1925 when they moved to Rock Valley. He was baptized in the Lutheran church and was a charter member of Peace Lutheran church.
Survivors are his widow; five sons, Will of Rock Valley, Theodore of Sioux Center, Arno and Fritz of Swan Valley, Idaho, Herman of Idaho Falls; one daughter, Mrs. Paul Traughber of Irwin, Idaho; three brothers, John of Rock Valley and Louis and Albert of Craig; two sisters, Mrs. Arnold Lendt and Mrs. Charley Anderson of Marcus, 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 and 2 o'clock at Peace Lutheran church Monday afternoon with Rev. C. J. Rebeleen in charge. Pall bearers were Will, Arno, Herman, Theodore, Fritz and Herman Winterfeld. Burial was in the church cemetery.
