Funeral services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church May 22, for Fred W. Helbing, 78, of Hull, who died at his home May 20. Services were conducted by the Reverend A.H. Fritschel and burial was made in the church cemetery.

Survivors include the widow, Augusta (Strange)Helbing; a sister, Mrs. Anna McCormic, of San Diego, California.

Tuesday evening, July 9th, the members of the Hull Volunteer Fire department; Mayor Doores Waanders; Mr. Zip Hudson, Fire Chief of Sheldon; and Mr. Don Hutchinson, Assistant State Fire Marshall of Storm Lake, and local editor, gathered at the fire house in Hull to witness the presentation of the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Community Service by Volunteer Firemen to Mrs. Fred Helbing, who received the award for her husband posthumously.

Mr. Fred Van Engen, Fire Chief at Hull, emceed the presentation program. Following introductions of guests, Mr. Van Engen read a resume of Mr. Helbing’s activities as Fireman, as prepared by the Iowa State University:

“Fred Helbing, longtime resident of Hull, Iowa, had served on the Hull Fire Department for forty-seven years and had capably served the department as chief for thirty-six years. He retired from this position in 1961 and retained the position of Honorary Fire Chief until his death.

“Mr. Helbing came to Hull in 1914 and joined the fire department in the fall of that year. The hand cart was still used by the Hull Fire Department at the time he joined. In 1925 he was elected to serve as Fire Chief and in 1961, due to advancing age, retired from this position having helped in the growth and development of a department which had but one hand cart to one which adequately and admirably serves Hull and surrounding area.

“During his life as a fireman, “Fritz” had worked diligently to serve the public, believing strongly in fire prevention, fire protection, safety and participation in civic activities. While fire chief, regular inspections of business establishments and schools were made under Mr. Helbing’s direction.

“Mr. Helbing had a great regard for his fellowman, a special regard for the men who worked with him on the fire department, a number who have worked with him for many years. These men held him in high esteem. He had a deep respect for Hull and its citizens and was proud that Hull was his home.”

Mr. Zip Hudson, Fire Chief at Sheldon, and one who knew Mr. Helbing well as a Fireman, presented the Plague to Mrs. Helbing and made some very appropriate remarks. This plague was one of six to be issued each year by the Governor.
