Mrs. Gertrude Zevenbergen, age 86, of Hull, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, April 10, at 10:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Loren Kotman will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 3:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Gertrude was born on April 26, 1930, at Hull, the daughter of John and Fenna (Moes) Kiers. She was raised in Hull, where she graduated from the Western Christian High School.

Gert worked as a telephone operator in both Hull and Sheldon until marrying John Julius Zevenbergen on August 17, 1965 in Hull. Together they made their home in Hull, where they owned and operated Zevenbergen Plumbing and Heating. Gert helped with the bookkeeping and general office work until 1998, when the couple retired. John was known for being a character and a prankster. He passed away on August 25, 2001, in Sioux City.

Mrs. Zevenbergen was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church. She played both the piano and the organ and also gave piano lessons. She was an avid card and board game player and was very competitive when playing Scrabble with her friends.

Survivors include her brother and his wife, Henry and Lila Kiers, of Sheldon; John’s brother and his wife, Allen and Tylene Zevenbergen, of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law, Arta Zevenbergen, of Sioux Center; and Betty Zevenbergen, of Little Rock; two nephews, Rick Kiers, and his wife Eleanor, and Marty Kiers, all of Hull; a niece and her husband, Lisa and Todd Merley, of Ashton; and many more nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by John’s two brothers, Marion Zevenbergen and Art Zevenbergen, and Art’s first wife, Esther.

Memorials may be directed to the Hull Christian School.
