PASSED AWAY IN CALIFORNIA VETERANS HOSPITAL--WAS A NATIVE OF CALLIOPE,57 YEARS OF AGE, AND A VETERAN OF THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR

Word was received in Hawarden of the death of Levi Heald, former Hawarden resident, which occurred in a Veterans Hospital at Napa, California Wednesday, April 11th, where he had been for several months. No details concerning his death were disclosed in the message but it was known that Mr. Heald had been ill for some time suffering from rheumatism. Funeral services were held in California last Saturday.

Levi Heald, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Heald, was born in Calliope October 11, 1876, and so was past 57 years of age at the time of his death. He grew to young manhood in Calliope where he attended school and later he attended college in Sioux City. In the early days he operated a restaurant here in partnership with his brother, Ed. Heald, and later he was employed by an attorney but he reengaged later in the restaurant business. At. The outbreak of the Spanish-American War he enlisted in the First South Dakota Volunteers and was stationed in the Philippine Islands. After the war he returned to Hawarden but he left here twenty years ago for Redding, California, to prospect for gold . While in California and Oregon he also operated a restaurant but for some time past had lived with his sister in California. Mr. Heald never married.

He is survived by his father, A.W. Heald of Laramie, Wyoming; and one sister, Mrs. Alice Vander Viev of Los Angeles, California; and six brothers. Clifford of Denver, Colorado; Clyde of Littleton, Colorado; Walter of Fairfield, Ohio, Ray of Anderson, Missouri; Ed of Silverton, Oregon and A.G. Heald of Hawarden.
