Louis Hazel, 78, of Hawarden, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services was held January 11 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with the Reverend Todd Bunge officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.

Louis Hazel was born February 12, 1924 near Fairview, in Lincoln County, South Dakota, to William and Anne (Herman) Hazel. He attended rural schools and served with the U.S. Army from January 1946 to March 1947. He married Garnet Zoeller on February 23, 1951 at Luverne, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Hawarden where Mr. Hazel was employed at the Standard Gas Station and later at the Conoco Station. He also worked for the Sioux County Highway Department for 19 years and drove a maintainer for Pleasant Township north of Beresford. He drove school bus for many years. Mrs. Hazel died April 29, 1974.

Mr. Hazel was a past member of the Hawarden Fire Department and the Hawarden Saddle Club.

Survivors include: Three brothers, William Hazel, Jr. of Sioux Falls, John Hazel of Baltic, South Dakota, and Ray Hazel of Hudson; four sisters, Nellie Keizer of Akron; Wilma Ronsiek of Hawarden, Jennie West of Sioux Falls and Clara Larson of Luverne, Minnesota; two brothers-in-law, Leonard Zoeller of Hawarden and Wendell Zoeller of Ireton; a sister-in-law, Darlene Zoeller of Hawarden and many nieces ad nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers-in-law, Richard Zoeller, Sam Keizer and Lyle McAninch; and sisters-in-law, Louise McAninch and Marilyn Hazel.
