Smit, Cornelius "Casey" 1926-2017

Mr. Casey Smit, age 90, of Boyden, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, March 22, at 10:30 am, at the First Reformed Church in Boyden. The Rev. David Poppen will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Sheridan Township Cemetery near Boyden. Visitation will be after 6:00 pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Cornelius was born on December 26, 1926, in rural Le Mars, the son of Dick and Bertha (De Jong) Smit. He was raised near Maurice and Rock Valley, where he attended both public and rural schools. On April 22, 1946, he entered the United States Army, serving for two years in Korea.

On February 9, 1949, he married Luella Gertrude Vermeer in Boyden. Together they made their home near Boyden, where “Casey” worked at the Farmers Cooperative Elevator, was a farmer for 25 years and upon retirement, was a hired hand for Dennis Fiihr. Luella passed away on March 8, 2013, in Yuma, Arizona.

Mr. Smit was a member of the First Reformed Church and the William Monster American Legion Post, both in Boyden. He enjoyed golfing, playing pool and shuffleboard and wood working. He also loved to sing and did so with the Senior Saints for a number of years.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Laura Kay and Tom Bonestroo, of Hull, IA; a son and his wife, Dennis Jay and Judy Smit, of Queen Creek, AZ; a daughter-in-law, Deanna Hamlin, of Springfield, MN; nine grandchildren; Jason Wynia, and his wife, Misty, of Bar Nunn, WY; Stephanie Hamlin, of Springfield, MN; Jeffrey Hamlin, and his wife, Shawna, also of Springfield, MN; Rebecca, and her husband, Chad Baatz, of Hospers, IA; Jodi, and her husband, Jonathan Bruce, of Los Angeles, CA; Tony Bonestroo, and his wife, Jessica, of Hull, IA; Tai Dinh, of Houston, TX; Danielle, and her husband, Nick Tempel, of Westminster, CO; Michael Smit, and his wife, Ally, of Denver, CO; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Pete Smit, and his wife, Joyce, of George, IA; and three sisters-in-law, Loretta Smit, Marjorie Chassels and Bertha Vermeer.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Carey Lee Smit and Larry Ray Smit; two brothers, Tom Smit, and his wife, Gert Smit (Sjaarda) and John Smit; and a sister, Nellie, and her husband, Stewart Kuiper.
