Mavis Jolene was born on September 19, 1953, in rural Sheldon, the daughter of Maynard and Edna (Den Hartog) Dykstra. She was raised on a farm south of Sheldon and attended the Sheldon Community School and the Spencer School of Business.

On May 10, 1974, she married James A. Aberson, in Sheldon. They made their home in Orange City. Mavis was an in-home daycare provider for 28 years, helped with preschool, and ran her own in-home preschool for a short time. Children were very important to her, and many of those she cared for have become lifelong friends.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, youth sponsor, Girls League sponsor, and was a member of the Priscilla Circle. Her two biggest joys in life were spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and her friends. She looked forward to visiting with the important people in her life, especially over a cup of coffee. After becoming ill, she began ministering to others going through an illness by spending many hours writing cards and notes of encouragement.

Survivors include her husband of more than 42 years, three children, Michelle, and her husband, Don Vaas, of Orange City, and their children Emma, Kleyton, Elizabeth, and Bennet; Melissa Aberson, and her special friend Jason Jarck, of Des Moines; and Aaron Aberson, and his wife, Kate, of Orange City, and their twin daughters on the way; her mother, Edna Dykstra, of Sheldon; a brother, Mark Dykstra, and his wife, Chris, of Hospers; a sister-in-law, Donna Dykstra, of Sheldon; two brothers-in-law, Don Huitink, of Wellsville, Kansas, and Ken Aberson, and his wife, Deb, of Alta; a sister-in-law, Deb, and her husband, Norm Kempema, of Rock Valley; and several nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends who were like family.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Keith Dykstra; her father and mother-in-law, Tony and Ethel Aberson; and a sister-in-law, Karla Huitink.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice or the First Reformed Church Cornerstone Fund.
