Gerald L. Prewitt, 91, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017 at his residence.

Gerald was born Jan. 16, 1926 in Hawarden, the son of Ward and Amy (Johnson) Prewitt. He enlisted in the United States Army on March 29, 1944 and served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre in Okinawa, Japan in the heavy artillery unit. He was honorably discharged on April 13, 1946.

After his military service, Gerald worked at Sioux City Battery, where he met his wife LaVonne Church. The couple was married Nov. 1, 1946 in Sioux City. She preceded him in death on Sept. 4, 1992. Gerald married Frances Connick on May 15, 1994, in Fremont, Nebraska.

Gerald worked for Ralston Purina for 36 years before retiring on Aug. 1, 1994. "JP" loved his coworkers and attended the Purina Christmas Party for a total of 59 years.

Jerry loved to fish, camp, and bowl, but his greatest love was for his garden. He often shared his many plants with friends and family.

He was a member of the American Legion Oleson-Halweg Post 125 in Merrill, for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife Frances Prewitt of Sioux City; children: Dennis (Patti) Prewitt of Heber, Arizona, Doug (Edie) Prewitt of Merrill, and Deb (Dale) Kroeger of Merrill; daughter-in-law: Lesley Prewitt of Aurora, Colorado; stepchildren: Jim (Kathy) Connick of Minburn, Ron (Diane) Connick of Sutherland, Nebraska, Terry Connick of Doniphan, Nebraska, Jeff (Gloria) Connick of Sioux City, and Carolyn Connick of Arlington, Nebraska; grandchildren: Dennis (Terri) Engdhal, Aaron (Cindy) Prewitt, Tiffany (Leo) Brennan, Jess (Tony) Emerson, Courtney Clark, Nick Kroeger, Taylor Prewitt (Paul School), and Jenna Prewitt (fiancé George Neuberger); 15 great-grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren and spouses; 36 stepgreat-grandchildren; two step great-great-grandchildren; Sblings: Richard (Loretta) Prewitt of Seattle, Washington, Evelyn Farnsworth of Rochester, New York, Jane Byus of Indianapolis, Indiana, Candace (Steve) Bruhn of Iowa City; brother-in-law Paul (Sharon) Calkins of Des Moines; sister-in-law Pat Prewitt of Peoria, Arizona; sister-in-law Toni Prewitt of Troy, Missouri, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; wife LaVonne; son David Prewitt; stepson Kenneth Connick; mother-in-law Alice Calkins; and his brothers Dennis David, Don, and Vernon.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 18 at Riverside Lutheran Church in Sioux City with Pastor Tim Squier officiating. Visitation was Friday, Feb. 17, from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Burial was at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City with military honors presented by Oleson-Halweg Post 125 of Merrill. The Meyer Brothers Funeral Homes of Sioux City is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to be donated to local Veteran’s Programs.
