From the Rock Valley Bee, June 5, 1947:

Jessia[i.e., Jessica] Smith Thayer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Smith, was born at Batavia, Michigan, January 11, 1862. She spent her last Mother's Day with her son Edward and family. During the night she suffered from a stroke and was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital in Pomona, California the following day, where she died on May 18. She had attained the age of 85 years.

She was united in marriage to Edward S. Thayer in Union Township, Michigan on January 32[i.e. 21], 1884. Shortly afterward they came to Iowa and they spent most of [their] married life in Rock Valley. After her husbands death in 1922 she moved to Los Angeles, and later to Claremont, California.

Four children were born to this union, one daughter, Nellie, who passed away in infancy and three sons, Stan[i.e., Starr] of Houston, Texas, Wayne of Los Angeles, California, and Edward of Claremont, Californa. Her sons were with her during her last illness.

Other close relatives are a brother of Tujunga, two grandsons, Dave and O. E. of Houston, her granddaughters, Jessie Ellen Barr of Modesta[Modesto?], and Froma Ruth Thayer of Claremont, and one great granddaughter, Caroline June Barr.

Several nieces and nephews of this vicinity were present Sunday to pay their last respects.
