Second Death from Typhoid
Thomas E. Yates Passed Away Sunday Afternoon

Thomas E. Yates passed away at his home in this city late Sunday afternoon following an illness of a little over two weeks from typhoid fever. He was very ill from the start and
failed steadily, it being realized for several days before his death that there was practically no chance for his recovery and that the end was near. He had not been in robust health for some time prior to his fatal illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Ross Funeral Home and at 2:30 at the Baptist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. E. Bruner. A large number of relatives and friends were in attendance. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.
Thomas E. Yates was born on his father's farm in Center township Sioux county, Oct. 9, 1889, and passed away in Hawarden April 3, 1927, at the age of, 37 years, 5 months and 24 days. The early years of his life were spent on the home farm but in 1900 he moved with his parents to Hawarden. He attended the Hawarden public schools and graduated from the high school in June, 1909. During his high school career he took a prominent part in athletics and played quarterback on the high school football team. On Aug. 20, 1909, he was united in marriage with Miss Kittie Estes and they located near Sturgis, S. D., where they resided a little over four years. They moved from Sturgis onto the old home farm, north of Ireton, in the spring of 1914 and after operating the farm for several years moved to Ireton where they remained for a short time and then came to Hawarden five years ago, since which time he has been employed as a mechanic by the Tilgner Auto Co. He was steady and wholly reliable and was highly regarded by all who knew him. He was a member of the Baptist church of Hawarden. His is the second death from the typhoid epidemic now upon us which is being watched with anxious care by all our citizens.
He leaves to mourn his untimely death his wife and five children, three daughters and two sons, Myrtle, Rodney, Max, Luverne and Gladys. He also leaves three brothers and two sisters, Chas. F. Yates of Sanborn, Iowa; Mrs. C. H. Schutt of Fairmont, N. D.; James Yates of Ireton; Mrs. Elizabeth Schutt of Denver, Colo.; Ernest Yates of Hawarden, and Mrs. L. A. Hunsaker of Burke, S. D. His mother passed away in Hawarden April 26, 1922; his older brother, Wm. Yates, died Nov. 28, 1926, and his father, Thos. Yates Sr., passed away suddenly while visiting his daughter in Denver Fed. 12, 1927. All of his brothers and sisters were here to attend the funeral.
To the bereaved relatives and especially the wife and five young children, left fatherless by this seemingly cruel hand of fate, the hearts of our citizens go out in sympathetic understanding.
