Two Young Men Meet Tragic Death at Crossing
Joseph Barry and Julius Horst were almost instantly killed last Saturday morning when the car in which they were riding was struck by the morning passenger train on the crossing about ten miles northwest of Rock Valley. Mr. Horst was driving and on account of the strong northwest wind that was blowing did not notice the oncoming train. Mr. Horst living in this vicinity for several years and has worked on farms around here. He was about 30 years of age and was a young man who was well thought of by all who knew him.

The community was shocked and saddened last Saturday morning by the tragic death of Joseph Michael Barry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Barr, well know residents of this vicinity. He was born Jun 18, 1905 and grew to manhood on the farm where his parents still reside, eight miles northwest of Rock Valley.
Joseph attended rural schools after which he graduated from the Inwood High school with the class of 1925. His wining personality and genial disposition won for him a host of friends. And his kindness which was not confined to people alone was extended to every one of God’s creatures, especially the tiniest and most helpless. Every animal on the farm was his special pet.

Requiene High Mass was celebrated in St. Mary’s church in rock Valley, by Rev. Father A. J. Poerster after which the body was laid to rest in St. Mary’s cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by sorrowing friends and relatives who will miss Joseph’s kindly cheerful manner as well as his many acts of helpful kindness.

Note: from a family history on line, Joseph Michael Barry born 18 Jun 1905 Rock Valley died 1 Mar 1930 Rock Valley IA. He was the son of Joseph John Joe Barry 1857-1936 and Margaret Hevern 1869-1958. They had a large family - May Mary, Elsie Agatha, Margaret Marjorie, Francis Leo, Ethel, Paul Edward, Joseph Michael, William Patrick, and Claire T.
