Klaus/Klaas Zwaan

Mr. Klaus Zwaan, a families figure in Rock Valley died at about 11:00 o'clock on Thursday morning July 5, 1944 at the age of 96 years, 4 months and one day. In February 1943 he suffered a stroke and since has been confined to his home. Mr. Zwaan was an expert gardener for many years and did truck gardening here and was known by every housewife in town. He remained active after his age had caused him to give up his work.
Klaas Zwaan was born at Gemeente Zype, March 5, 1848. He married a young woman and to this union were born three children, Willie, Kate and Elizabeth. Will resided in Rock Valley where he worked as a painter and paperhanger for many years and later moved to New Jersey where he died some years ago. Elizabeth Schrieken resides at the Helder, Netherlands. His wife preceded him in death, and in October 1883 he married Grietje Spierdyk at Petten, North Holland in the Netherlands. Five children were born to this union, one son died at the age of 20 months being drowned near a dyke. Those left to mourn are Case of Cherokee; Greta, Mrs. John Vander Poel; Fannie, Mrs. J C Boote, Worthington, Minn.; and Sadie Mrs. Tom Ver Doom, Rock Valley.
The family arrived in this country March 5, 19088, and came directly to this vicinity where they farmed for six years and then moved to Rock Valley. Mrs. Zwaan passed away on January 27, 1936. Funeral services were held at the home at 3:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. H.J. Aberson. Mrs. Jake Vande Weerd sang "Abide With Me" as a solo. Pall bearers were John Dodewaard, James Vander Poel, John Haupt, Tom Gerritsen, Bernard Splear and George Van Dyke who bore him to his last resting place in Valley cemetery.
Besides his four children he leaves 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Those from a distance who attended were Mr and Mrs. J.C. Boote and Mr. and Mrs. Judson Boote of Worthington, Minn., Mr. .and Mrs. Peter Andriessen, Hawarden, Mr. and Mrs. John Boote and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Roozing of Hull, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry De Vries and daughter of Hawarden.
