Pneumonia Fatal to Youth Here

Funeral services were conducted in Trinity Lutheran church of this city Tuesday afternoon for Gerhardt Zoeller, nearly 18, who, after but two days of illness, died Friday evening, January 23, at the home of his parents in the northeast part of Hawarden.
Gerhardt Paul Zoeller, son of Henry Zoeller and wife, Elsie, was born in Murray county, Minnesota on February 7, 1935, and received into communion with the Triune God through the sacrament of holy baptism on April 14 of that same year in the Lutheran church of Jeffers, Minn., with Rev. P. M. Knoll officiating.
In his early years his parents moved from Minnesota to the Hawarden, vicinity. He entered Central school of this city for his elementary education. During this time he also attended the Lutheran Sunday school for his religious training. On April 30, 1950, he renewed his baptismal covenant with the Triune God in the sacred rite of confirmation, Rev. H. E. Sieving officiating. In the fall of that year he entered the local high school and, at the time of his death, was a member of the junior class.
Apparently in good health, he had attended his classes during the forepart of last week. Last Thursday, however, he was stricken with influenza and, with the complication of pneumonia setting in the next day, he died about 10:30 that evening.
Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Richard, Leonard and Wendell, at home; two sisters, Louise Zoeller of Sanger, Calif., and Mrs. Garnette Hazel of Hudson, S. D., and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meier of Jeffers, Minn.
In order to give his schoolmates an opportunity to attend his funeral the high school dismissed classes at 1:45. The junior class formed an honor guard in the processional, and the following acted as pall bearers: Fritz Beck, Donald Heeren, Juells Johnson, Harry Lambertson, Gary Schoenrock and Keith Waterman. Betty Boyles, Janet Bultman, Shirley Christensen, Mary Eidsness, Janice Johnson, Lois Schneider and Shirley Stark sang "Be Still, My Soul," and "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me." Mrs.R, C. Bunge was at the organ.
Committal arrangements, in charge of the Barnard Funeral home, were made in Grace Hill cemetery of this city, with Rev. O. F. W, Pittack officiating at the service and grave.
