Reekers, Frederick L. 1931-2017

Mr. Frederick Reekers, age 85, of Hospers, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 21, at 10:30am at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Michael Lewis will officiate. Interment will be held prior to the service at the Hospers Cemetery and will begin with a prayer at the church at 9:30am.

Visitation will begin at 5:00pm on Friday, January 20 at the church with family present from 5:00-7:00pm. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Frederick Lee was born on March 30, 1931, in Sheldon, the son of Arie and Dena (Teeselink) Reekers. He was raised in the Archer and Primghar areas and graduated from Archer High School in 1948. From November 20, 1951, to March 10, 1953, he served in the United States Marines during the Korean Conflict.

On September 8,1955, he married Joyce Carol Te Stroete in Hospers. They farmed east of Hospers for nine years and then moved to their farm west of Hospers. After more than 54 years of marriage, Joyce passed away on May 20, 2010 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Fred was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as a deacon and an elder. He also belonged to the Reuter American Legion Post in Hospers and served on the school board of education for Floyd Valley Community Schools for many years, as well as on the Hospers Library Board.

He enjoyed traveling and took several trips across the country, including an honor flight to Washington DC. He loved spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren.

Survivors include his two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Lance Ehmcke, of Sioux City; and Kristin and Galen Mars, of Orange City; six grandchildren, Betsy, Abby, David and Hannah Ehmcke, Allison (Michael) Haight, and Erin (Tony) Schuiteman; three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Mary Reekers, Larry Silvernail, Sandy Reekers, and Arloa Te Stroete; and a special friend Phyllis Reynolds of Onawa.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Arnold Reekers, two sisters, Glenda Silvernail and Donna (in infancy) and a brother-in-law, Gary Te Stroete.

Memorials may be given in his name and directed to the Hope Network, 3075 Orchard Vista Drive SE., PO Box 890, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49518-0890.
