DIED 4 DAYS AFTER HER HUSBAND--MRS. GEORGE GERDES PASSED AWAY FRIDAY--WAS 52 YEARS OLD AND HAD LIVED IN HAWARDEN FOR 11 YEARS--LEAVES TWO DAUGHTERS

Mrs. George Gerdes passed away at her home in Hawarden early last Friday morning, just four days following the death of her husband and within twelve hours after his remains had been laid to rest. During the final days of her husband’s illness, Mrs. Gerdes developed pneumonia and became ill following his death and this no doubt hastened her demise.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church in this city, conducted by the pastor, Reverend Robert H. Forrester, but interment was not made until Monday afternoon, due to the inability of one of her daughters to reach here from Texas in time for the funeral Sunday. Interment was made in the Ireton Cemetery where her husband was buried last week.

Mabel Bullock was born in Evansville, Wisconsin, January 26, 1879, and died in Hawarden March 13, 1931, at the age of 52 years, 1 month and 17 days. On October 21, 1895, she was united in marriage with Daniel W. Jones. Two daughters were born to this union, Mrs. Helen Daubs of Kansas City, Missouri, and Mrs. Leslia Sikes of Abilene, Texas. On August 15, 1914, she was united in marriage with George Gerdes. They made their home on the Gerdes farm in Washington Township until 1920 when they built a home in Hawarden where they resided until called by death.

Mrs. Gerdes was received into membership in the Methodist Church of Hawarden eleven years ago. She also was affiliated with the Rebekah Lodge and Woman’s Relief Corps. Following her marriage to Mr. Gerdes she also made a home for his brother, the late John Gerdes, permitting the brothers to continue a close relationship which lasted throughout their entire lives, the two brothers never having been separated for more than a few weeks during a period of 56 years. John Gerdes passed away about a year ago.

Her death, coming so soon after that of her husband, was a distinct shock to the citizens of this community, few of whom were apprised of her serious illness and the sympathy of all goes out to the members of her family in their bereavement.
