JOHN GERDES DIES AFTER ILLNESS OF FIFTEEN MONTHS--WAS 57 YEARS OLD AND LIVED IN SIOUX COUNTY OVER 40 YEARS--LEAVES ONE BROTHER AND THREE SISTERS

John Gerdes, a well known citizen of Hawarden and a resident of Sioux County for more than forty years, passed away at the home of his brother, George Gerdes, in this city at 5:30 o’clock this morning, following an illness of fifteen months from goiter and heart trouble. He had been able to sit up and walk about the house until within a few days preceding his death. Last summer his condition showed some improvement but this proved to be only temporary.

Funeral services will be held at the Gerdes home at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon and at 1:30 at the Lutheran Church in this city, with Reverend George Steinkamp in charge. Interment will be made in the cemetery at Ireton.

John Gerdes was born at Edwardsville, Illinois, March 28, 1872, so at the time of his death lacked less than two months of being 58 years of age. He grew to young manhood in Illinois but in 1889 came to Sioux County with his brother, George Gerdes, and they located on a farm in Washington Township, two miles northeast of the present McNally Station, where they farmed in partnership for twenty-six years when they purchased a farm in the same neighborhood, which they operated for four years. Ten years ago they quit farming and moved to Hawarden and have since made their home in this city. Mr. Gerdes never married.

Besides his brother, George Gerdes, he is survived by three sisters, Misses Rebecca, Hattie, and Marie Gerdes, all of Hawarden.

Mr. Gerdes was a man of large physique, always a hard and steady worker, strictly honorable in all his business dealings, and numbered many steadfast friends in this community who will join in extending sympathy to his relatives.
