Henry Braafhart, 94, of Fort Dodge, formerly of Orange City, died of pneumonia Saturday, September 14, 1996, at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge. Services were held on Wednesday, September 18, 1996 at VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home in Orange City with the Rev. Harlan Van Oort officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton.

Mr. Braafhart was born February 4, 1902, in Ede, Gelderland, the Netherlands, the son of Casper and
Gertrui (Veenendaal) Braafhart. In 1921 he came to the United States, where he assisted farmers.

On August 2, 1929, he married Nellie Hoogland. The couple farmed at Dallas, Monroe, Union and Mallard. She died April 20,1966. On November 2, 1972, he married Leona Vanita Witzenburg at Nashua. They made their home ion Orange City until June 1991, when they moved to-Friendship Haven at Fort Dodge. The couple rode seven times with the RAGBRAI; his last time was at age 85. They also traveled extensively.

Mr. Braafhart was a member of the American Reformed Church in Orange City. In earlier years he was recognized as a champion corn grower in Iowa.

Survivors include his wife; five nephews, two named Casper Braafhart, and Gerald, Harry and Morris Braafhart, and a niece, Alice Braafhart . He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lambert, Casper, Morris and an infant, and three sisters, Betsy Top, Richy Mosterd and Cathrene Rosseboon. Memorials may be given in his name to the American Reformed Church or Friendship Haven Inc.
