Died – Bowen May 3, 1885, Lamenta B. Bowen, daughter of Levi and Jane Bowen, aged 23 years 8 months and 23 days.

The deceased was born in Taycheda, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin Jan 10, 1862, where she spent her early childhood. Removing with her parents to Sioux County IA, in the spring of 1870, where she remainder until that fell destroyer consumption took her from the embrace of parents, brothers and loved ones, to dwell with her Savior, in a purer and brighter land. She had been a teacher in Sioux County for several years, in which capacity she was highly esteemed, and where she made many warm friends, both among scholars and patrons, by her uniform kindness, and her exemplary life. She was ever ready with a pleasant word, or act to cheer the hears of those around her. She will long be missed by those who knew her best. In her early youth she gave her heart to the Savior, in whom her trust was firm through her long and weary illness. She was an only daughter, her sister, Mrs. Katie Morton, having been buried nearly nine years ago by the side of where she now rests. She leaves three brothers. She could truly be said to be as a ray of sunshine in the household.

The blow falls heavily upon her aged parents, who may rest assured that their darling is not lost, but gone before. She was engaged to be married to Charles Chenhall of Sioux County, but her Redeemer say it to call her to come up higher, ere the holy bonds were consumated. Aye, truly in the midst of life we are in death. But when Christ who is our life shall appear, may she with all her loved ones, appear with him in glory. Ireton Clipper.

Note: Lamenta Bowen is listed in the Sioux County Cemetery index as having died 3 May 1885 age 23 buried in St. John’s cemetery Ireton IA. Her parents were Levi Bowen and Jane Passenger 1823-1908. Children in the family were: Henry 1847, Katie 1850-1874, Asa 1851, Abe 1854, Charles L. 1858-1928 and Lamenta 1861-1885.
