Herman's first wife was Katherine McCoy born in Iowa and they had five children (James, Marcella, Henrietta, Max, and Clarence). At the time of his WWI draft registration in September 1918 and was described to be tall with blue eyes and brown hair. He was working as a car repairer in Alton. In 1920, Herman and Katherine were living in Nassau, Sioux, Iowa with their children James, Marcella, and Henrietta. Herman was working as a home carpenter.

After Katherine's death, he married Frances Ferguson on November 17, 1931 in Canton, Lincoln County, South Dakota (her second marriage too). He and Fanny were the maternal grandparents of Donald R. Gerber but took on the role of parents to raise him in Alton, Iowa and adopted him.

He was buried in the Nassau Township Cemetery, Alton, Sioux County, Iowa.
