An Alton woman died in a two-vehicle accident near Alton last Wednesday.

Sherly Lynn Gebauer, 35, rural Alton, died at the Orange City Municipal Hospital from injuries she received in the accident August 3. At 9:45 P.M. Gebauer was traveling east on a gravel road one mile south of Alton near Highway 60. When reaching the highway, she turned to go north, pulling in front of a northbound semi. The two vehicles collided at the intersection, sending the Gebauer vehicle into the east ditch. The semi truck came to rest in the west ditch.

Gebauer was pinned in her vehicle. Rescue units from Alton and Orange City worked to free her.

A Paulina ambulance, traveling on Highway 60 after a transfer, was one of the first vehicles to arrive following the accident. That ambulance and the Orange City ambulance transported the two drivers to the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Driver of the semi, Dennis L. Kreykes, 39, was treated and released.

Kreykes’ 1980 International semi pulling a grain trailer received $2,000 in front end damage. The Gebauer 1978 Pontiac was a total loss. Gebauer was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

The Kreykes semi was registered to Farm Credit Leasing Services of Minneapolis. The Gebauer vehicle was registered to William and Sheryl Gebauer.

The accident is still under investigation by the Sioux County Sheriff’s Department.

Mrs. Sheryl L. Gebauer, age 35, of Alton, passed away Wednesday, August 3, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital after being involved in an automobile accident.

Sheryl Lynn was born June 11, 1953 at Downey, California, the daughter of Eugene McGuffin Prather and Joan Muriel Van Kley Prather. She was raised and educated in California.

On December 1, 1972 she married William Albert Gebauer at Olive, California. The continued to live in California until 1981 when they moved to Alton. She was currently employed at the OK Café in Alton. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Sheldon.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters Jackie and Kristine; parents of Anaheim, California; grandmother, Johanna Van Kley of Fullerton, California; and two sisters, Mrs. Tom (Tanya) Hazelton of Yorba Linda, California, and Mrs. Ken (Jana) Knapp of Laguna Beach, California.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 8 at Calvary Baptist Church in Sheldon with the Reverend Lyonel M. Watkins officiating. Interment followed at Nassau Township Cemetery in Alton under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
