Died: October 15, 1935

Funeral services for Mrs. John A. Gartland, who died Saturday, were held at her house at Rock Valley Monday afternoon at two o’clock, with the Order of Eastern Star in charge. Mrs. Gartland was a member of the for many years and past worthy matron of the Rock Valley Chapter.

Harriet E. Rodier was born in New Haven, Connecticut, on October 31, 1860. The family moved to the Middle West when she was 10 years old, locating in Dubuque, but five years later moved to Rockford, Illinois. On August 26, 1885, she was married to John A. Gartland at Aurora, Illinois, where Mr. Gartland was employed in a watch factory. The couple celebrated their golden anniversary at Rock Valley the past August. After a residence of 3 years in Aurora they moved back to Rockford and in October 1895, came west to Rock Valley, forty years ago this month, where they resided every since.

She is survived by her husband and one son, Dr. L.R. Gartland, of Spencer and her two grandchildren, Bobbie and Helen Gartland; also by one sister, Miss Della M. Rodier, now 31 years of age, of Rock Valley. Miss Rodier has made her home with the Gartlands ever since their marriage. An only brother passed away in 1923.

A member of the Eastern Star of many years standing, Mrs. Gartland was also a member of the P.E.O. She was an active member of the Eastern Star, held all the local offices of the order and was a delegate many times in conventions.

Another great interest in her life was gardening in which she took great delight and worked at with never-flagging interest as long as her health permitted. Of French-Dutch percentage, Mrs. Gartland was of a vivacious and enthusiastic nature, but held decided and well considered opinions. Generous hospitable and loyal, she made many staunch and appreciative friends to whom her passing is a severe loss and who extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

Mrs. Gartland became ill with a malady, which physicians declared incurable last winter, undergoing an operation about six months ago from which she rallied nicely and had been able to attend to her own work most of the time during the past summer, spending six weeks at the cottage of her son at Terrace Park, Lake Okoboji, enjoying the lake breezes in July and August. During their golden wedding celebration on August 26 she was hospitality itself to many friends, who called and held up well for several days afterward, but since that time had been in failing health, sinking rapidly the last few days.

A host of friends attended the services held at her home Monday and at Valley View Cemetery where interment was made.
