J. Peter Gaul, 90 of Granville died Tuesday in the Orange City Municipal Hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church at Granville. The Reverend Francis Nemmers will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen. There will be a prayer service at 5 P.M. Friday, the rosary will be recited at 7:30 P.M. by the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters and 8:30 P.M. by the parish in the church.

Mr. Gaul was born November 20, 1891, at rural Akron. He was raised near Alton and attended St. Mary’s Academy at Alton. He was engaged in farming.

He married Silvia Fischbach November 15, 1921, at Granville. She died January 30, 1940. He married Marie Arens Mahar July 6, 1942, at Portsmouth. From 1919 until retiring in 1961, he was a rural mail carrier in the Granville area. He had been residing at the Heritage House Nursing Home since November of 1980.

Mr. Gaul was an Army veteran of World War I, past member of the Board of Directors of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, past secretary and treasurer of Sioux County Rural Mail Carriers, past secretary and treasurer of the Catholic Order of Foresters at Granville.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Granville VFW, Paullina American Legion and retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Mark of Sioux Falls, Joseph of Granville, Peter of Arlington, Virginia and Theodore of Des Moines; 10 Daughters, Mrs. Les (Gertrude) Dekker, Mrs. Eugene (Rosemary) Nelson and Alfred (Angela) Uhrich, all of Sioux Falls, Sister Verna Gaul of Cascade, Mrs. James (Joan) Meaden of Slayton, Minnesota, Mrs. Harry (Ruth) Block of Sunnyvale, California, Mrs. William D. (Marjorie) Childers of San Diego, California, Mrs. Loren (Elinor) Crawford of Yankton, South Dakota, Mrs. Ivan (Clare) Pottebaum of Granville and Mrs. Gayl (Katherine) Hopkins of Sioux City; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Joanne Plendl of Watertown, Wisconsin; one stepson, James Mahar of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Martin of Le Mars and Nick of Alton; one sister, Mrs. Emil (Margaret) Hansen of Le Mars; 31 grandchildren; five step grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter (Catherine Delperdang) Gaul, five brothers, Anthony, Ferdinand, Frederich, Lambert and John, four sisters, Mrs. John (Mary) Vortherms, Mrs. Ernest (Ann) Kern, Mrs. Mike (Catherine) Holles and Mrs. Fred (Rose) Croat.
