Sioux County Capital March 28, 1940

Dirk Betten, 81, died Saturday morning in the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Lawrence, 511
29th street, Sioux City after an extended sickness. Mr .Betten was born Nov. 14, 1858 at Pella, la. For many years he was engaged in the hotel business at Orange City. He came to Sioux City four years ago.

Surviving are his widow, Mary; two sons, A. J. Betten of Evanston, IL.; and Harold of Omaha; five daughters, Mrs. A. C. Palmer and Mrs. Lawrence both of Sioux City, Mrs. Adrian Rieks of Pasadena, Mrs. Paul Colby of Morris, Tenn., and Mrs. E. L. Gaunt of Little Rock, Ark.; two brothers, Jacob of Chicago and J. N. Betten of Milwaukee; a sister Mrs. P. Prescott of Oshkosh, Wis. And nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the American Ref. church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. Mr. Stimson of the Presbyterian church at Sioux City and Rev. Mr. Le Roy Nattress in charge. Burial was made in the local cemetery.

Mr. Betten was a son of Rev. Anthony Betten, who was ordain ed to the ministry of the Dutch
Reformed church at Utrecht, The Netherlands, in 1842 and came to Pella, la. in 1847 and was one of
the first to set foot on the soil of where is now the town. He preached in the Pella locality often
walking six miles to where he was going to preach. He was also instrumental in bringing many settlers to Pella, and made several trips to the Netherlands, at one time bringing forty families with him. The family moved to Orange City in 1875, Anthony Betten, Jr long a county official here, being this oldest son and the decedent Dirk Betten being his youngest son, Herman Betten, long Sheriff here was a brother of the decedent. The decedent was in the hotel business in Orange City and the building is still standing. He always took a live interest in town and county affairs.

Mr. Betten was married to Mary Noteboom, sister of pioneers Arie and Klaas Noteboom and of Mr. Popma of Maurice.

The pallbearers were Gerrit Slobe, A. J. Kolyn, Jacob De Jong, W. W. Schltz, Gerrit Noteboom and Arie VanderStoep.
