Harriet Ruth was born on June 3, 1933, at Alton, the daughter of John and Henrietta (Hulst) Vande Weerd. She was raised in the Hospers area and graduated from the Newkirk High School.

On June 3, 1952, she married Albert H. Kooiker in Hospers. They made their home on a farm near Boyden until 1991, when they moved to Hull. Albert passed away on August 28, 2013 in Hull, having been married for more than 61 years. In November of 2013, Harriet became a resident of Aspen Heights Assisted Living in Hull, and one year later she moved to the Prairie Ridge Care Center.

Mrs. Kooiker was a member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church. She loved her family, especially holding the babies. While in memory care, she was holding her baby great-granddaughter, Charlee, and didn’t want to give her back to her mother, Julie. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and Justice for All in Rock Valley. She enjoyed farming, especially driving her tractor, baking for her loved ones, gardening, picking strawberries, camping, and traveling.

Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Luetta and Ken Hyronimus, of Worthing, South Dakota; Glen and Lisa Kooiker, Sheryl and Alan Warntjes, and Mark and Jessica Kooiker, all of Boyden; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Annetta Lammers, of Orange City, and Tracia, and her husband Dick Morren, of Beresford, South Dakota; a sister-in-law, Ruth Vande Weerd, of Mazeppa, Minnesota; many nephews and nieces; and her good friends Jim and Ann Wielenga.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Autumn Marie Hoekstra and Talon Michael Vande Kamp; three brothers, Bert Vande Weerd, and his wife, Hermine; Nick Vande Weerd, and his wife Clara; and Harold Vande Weerd, and his wife, Dorothy; a sister, Alys Vande Weerd; a brother-in-law, Don Lammers; and Albert’s siblings, William, and his wife Joan Kooiker; and Johanna, and her husband, Leroy Wallinga.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association and the Heartland Fragile X Association.
