Memorial Tribute

Joyce Diane Hulley, daughter of James and Elva (Conner) Kool, was born in Alton, IA on February 13, 1936. Her mother died when she was only 8 months old, leaving her grandparents, Frank and Lena Conner, to raise her and her sister, Frances.

She attended Sanborn Public School, graduating in 1953. Following graduation, Joyce continued her education at UNI at Cedar Falls, IA for two years, then returned to Sanborn and taught at the elementary level in that school system for the next 37 years. In 1966, she received her B.A. in education at Westmar College in LeMars, IA. All total, Joyce spent nearly 50 years of her life in the Sanborn school building! Looking back on it, she garnered many wonderful memories, made some lasting friendships, and was happy to have been able to be a part of the "best years for teaching".

On August 8, 1958, Joyce was united in marriage to Ray Hulley, Jr; they made their home in Sanborn.

In June of 2001, Joyce was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, but always managed to maintain a very active, productive life. She loved to golf, dance and spend time in her flower beds. Growing her own flowers meant there was usually a beautiful, fresh arrangement or two somewhere in the house. The kitchen was also one of her favorite places - good things to eat were created there, whether it was cooking OR baking. She always enjoyed having her family and friends in for meals...and possibly, a good card game.

Joyce was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Sanborn where she served on the church board, NEA-Life, and sang in the church choir for many years. She and Ray both belonged to a quartet organized through the church. In later years, Joyce would spend one morning each week sewing quilts with a group of ladies from the Lutheran church in town. She also made many school bags for missions, as well as blankets for Alzheimer residents. Joyce gave back to her community and enjoyed her life to the fullest. She passed away on Friday, October 22, 2016 at the age of 80.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Ray; her grandparents; her parents, James and Elva Kool; her sister, Frances Reinke; and step-sister, Harriet Warren.

Left to cherish her memory are her half-sister, Mary Wissink of Waurakee, WI; step-sister, Dorothy Wynia of Story City, IA; niece, Diane (Mike) Schulte of Sibley, IA; nephews: Larry (Glenda) Reinke of Orleans, IA, and Dennis (Janet) Reinke of Ashton, IA; great-nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
