Russell Wayne Smith, son of Wilbur W. and Mae A. (Everitt) Smith, was born on August 9, 1946 at Hull, Iowa. He spent his youth in the Sanborn, Iowa area, where he attended Sanborn Community School, graduating in 1964.

Following high school, Russell served his country with the United States Marines (1964 to 1968) and the United States Army (1972 to 1990). Throughout his military career, he was stationed in California, North Carolina, Kansas, Missouri, Georgia, Colorado, and Alabama in the states, and Japan, Vietnam, and Korea overseas. He completed several military training courses as well as various civilian college level courses while in service. After his honorable discharge, Russell spent the next 20 years in Vancouver, Washington where he was employed as a realtor with ERA Reality Agency and WINCO, Co.

In his free time, Russell enjoyed watching football and baseball games, or movies pertaining to the military. He was also an avid reader, but always had time for visits with family and friends. He was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Sanborn. Russell passed from this life on Monday, August 15, 2016 at the age of 70.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Walter and Mildred Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hacker; his parents, Wilbur and Mae Anne Smith; his brother, Paul William Smith; uncle, Ronald Smith; and an aunt, Mernice Lytle.

Survivors include his children: Leslie (John) Anderson of Milburn, Iowa, Lance (Stephanie) Smith of McCook Lake, South Dakota, and Sukyong Young Smith; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Ray Smith of Tolleson, Arizona; two sisters: Paula Rae (Rodger) Burley, and Patricia Ann Roberts both of Hartley, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
