From the Sioux County Index (Hull), August 20, 1920:

JOE HOEVEN DEAD

The community was shocked Monday evening [August 16] by the news that Joe Hoeven had passed away at a hospital at Rochester, Minnesota, where he had gone the week before for an operation. The operation for gall trouble, had been performed Saturday last, and from that time until the end came he gradually became weaker. The children were sent for Sunday and started immediately for the bedside of their father, Mrs. Hoeven having remained there from the time of the arrival.

The body was brought to Hull Tuesday evening and the funeral was held Thursday, at one o'clock from the home and at 2 o'clock from the First Reformed church, Rev. J. H. Kregel officiating, the remains being laid to rest in the family lot at Newkirk.

Mr. Hoeven was a most successful business man, and was highly respected by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and three children and host of relatives to mourn his sudden departure.

From the Alton Democrat, August 21, 1920:

JOE HOEVEN, 1872-1920

Joe Hoeven passed away Monday at the Mayo Brothers' hospital at Rochester, Minn., following an operation for gall stones. He had gone to Rochester with his brother Gerrit and both felt that the operation would not be serious. Complications set in, however, with fatal results. The news of his passing came as a dreadful shock to family and hundreds of friends. He was 48 years and three months of age.

Joe Hoeven was a real estate dealer at Hull at the time of his passing. He was one of seven brothers and four sisters, the children of E Hoeven of Sheldon who came to Sioux county when the country was still virgin prairie, unbroken by the plow and the hoarse whistle of a railway locomotive was unknown. Joe was born on the old homestead one mile west of Newkirk on May 15, 1872. He was married in 1900 to Miss Marie Thomassen at Pella. His wife and three children, Eleanor, John and Edward, the latter all still at home, survive the devoted husband and father.

For several years Mr. Hoeven was one of the city fathers of Hull. He was active in politics but did not seek public office himself. He was a staunch supporter of Democracy in Sioux county, and an influential bulwark in the cause of right, admired and liked by those opposed to his party as well as all who were in sympathy with his views. His influence and personality will be sorely missed. Friends extend their utmost sympathy to the bereaved family, the aged father and to the brothers and sisters.

The brothers and sisters are as follows: Ben Hoeven, George; Gerrit, Alton; Mrs. J. J. DeBruin, Hospers; Andrew, Sanborn; Mrs. C. P. DeJong, Hospers; Jake, Sheldon; Isaac, Sioux Center; Abe, Alton; Mrs. C. Idema, Sheldon; and Mrs. Bert Braskamp, Sheldon.

The funeral was held Thursday from the home and from the Dutch Reformed church of Hull, interment taking place at the Newkirk cemetery. Those present from abroad were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thomassen of Albert Lea, Minn.; Mrs. Thomassen and Mr. and Mrs. Jennings of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Schultz of Minneapolis; and Martin Thomassen of Pella. The services were conducted by Rev. Kregel.
