Pvt. Herbert Baartman of Rock Valley Died April 7th

Pvt. Herbert Baartman, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Baartman of Rock Valley, died early Sunday morning, April 7th, of pneumonia at the army hospital at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was ill for about five days, entering the hospital on Wednesday, April 3, and before he passed away he lapsed into unconsciousness.

Pvt. Baartman had entered the army not so long ago, and was home for a few hours about two weeks ago on a short leave. His father flew to Fort Lewis after receiving a telegram stating that his son was gravely ill, but he did not reach him in time. An aunt and uncle living in Oregon arrived before he died, but he had already lapsed into unconsciousness- before they came. Mr. Baartman returned with body of his son Wednesday.

Herbert was born April 1, 1927, near Rock Valley, and attended rural schools in that vicinity. He is survived by his parents and five brothers and two sisters, Gerald. Willis, Bernard, Roger, Tressa, Lawrence, and Betty Jane. One brother died two years ago.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 13 at the home at 1:30 and at the Chr. Ref. church in Rock Valley , in charge of Rev. J. H. Kuiper. The military escort was Pvt. John Van Maanen, and the color guard was from the American Legion Post at Rock Valley. Pall bearers were John van Maanen, Gerrit Van Maanen, Eugene Kruizenga, Dick Van Maanen, Henry van Sloten and Gerrit Van Otterloo. Interment was in Valley View cemetery with arrangements by Vander Ploeg’s.
